The most magnificent majesty of multiple meanings will manifest to the masses on the following months in these places of meeting:

Ikkicon - Jan 1st - 3rd Austin Texas

Templecon - Feb 5th - 7th Warwick Rhode Island

The Steampunk Worlds' Fair - May 14th - 16th Piscataway, NJ

World Steam Expo - May 28th - 31st Dearborn

This agenda is subject to change and will notify if done so.

The Lord Emperor would love to know who else may be attending these fine gatherings of the creative elite and endorses you to introduce yourself and converse greatly on matters of non-importance as you carouse till your heart's boil with joy.

The Emperor would also like to take this opportunity to enforce every one of you to have a joyous holiday.

Thank you,

Emissary to the most masterful of monarchs.

Greetings. Longtime costumer, first-time steampunk explorer, etc. etc.

In a search to understand just what makes steampunk costumes steampunk -- outside of actual pieces of faux technology, e.g. brass ray guns -- I've seen certain symbols: cogs, gears, watch faces, watch fiddly bits, keys, locks. To a lesser extent I have seen compass roses, compass faces, clock hands. It's also usual in jewelry in decoration to see coiled wire, with the occasional ship's wheel and (for some reason) the octopus. (All hail the octopus.)

There is another class of symbols that don't seem to be drawn upon for steampunk identifiers: the square and compass, the sun, the moon, scales, or the phoenix -- which are all masonic symbols. Freemasonry was a prestige club in Victorian England (or so I understand) and it seems like these "symbols of devising" would fit in with steampunk. But so far I have not seen any. Has anybody run across any of them in their steampunk wanderings?

(Also... has anybody seen Illuminati symbols worked in to steampunk costumes, like the eye in the pyramid?)

Thanks.

Greetings my fellow steampunks,

I pray that this missive finds you all in the rudest of health and the highest of spirits despite the seasonal chill that blights this land. And possibly the Americas too, I am uncertain. I had high hopes that this new technology would find a way to end the cold winters of my youth, but regrettably they continue unabated. Global warming my left foot.

But it is not environmental policy I wish to discuss with you all today. It is the orient. I believe at some point in the not too distant past, our very own J.D. Falksen wrote a series of articles relating to steampunk across a variety of cultures, one of these I believe was Japan and China. Sadly I am unable to locate a copy of this essay, despite my best efforts. I do wonder if one of my fellows would be able to send me one of those hyper-links to this work? I would also be very interested in hearing the thoughts of others on this matter, whether they be in essay format or less formal manner.

Seasons greetings from England,
Professor Zarkov

Hello!

This is Psyche Corporation [of Gilded Age Records]. I finished a new song ("Institute") last week, and it's probably the most steampunk song of my upcoming album. If you feel like it, take a listen! It has a ticking clock noise and other amusing percussive noises. Lyrics are under the cut, and the song can be heard at http://myspace.com/psychecorp Just scroll down the playlist and click on "Institute". I tried to make it go to the top of the playlist, but myspace keeps thwarting me, so it's at the bottom :/

More info on Psyche Corp. at http://www.psychecorporation.com

..and here's a picture to be decorative:

Why are there no BBC capslock communities? Stupider things do exist.

Holy shit 2x01 of Cranford was AWESOME. More of the same. Little old ladies over-exaggerating EVERYTHING. Now with more Tim Curry and Jonathan Pryce. And that kid from Millions hit puberty.

Gosh William Buxton sure is fugly. Button your tunic and mind your pap.

First let me apologize for not being more on the ball about the 2009 MTA Nostalgia Train in NYC. I was distracted by grad school and only yesterday did I notice the sign advertising the 2009 MTA Nostalgia Train. It is running on the V line on Sundays until December 27th, but because of yesterday's snowstorm, it's not running today. That means next Sunday is the last day to catch the Nostalgia Train. It's too bad that I missed the Vintage Tea Party on the nostalgia train on December 13 - maybe some of you were fortunate enough to attend? Anyway, it is a 1930s train, a bit beyond what might be considered steampunk, perhaps more steampulp or dieselpunk. Anyway I intend to try to catch it next Sunday, since I live right near the West 4th Street station, so it's just a matter of waiting on the V platform until one comes along. It's rather last minute but if anyone else is interested in riding the vintage train on December 27, leave a comment and we'll try to meet up.

I know I've not posted to this community before but i must share with you my tale of adventure! Due to circumstances still unknown to me my time machine seems to have made a wrong turn somewhere in the cosmos and i have arrived, quite to my surprise in this wintry land. (Fortuitously one of my trips into the future provided me with some excellent snow shoes!) The Adventure Continues! )

Hey there, I'm new here, sort of new to the whole steampunk thing in general but it's fascinated me for a while now. Anyway, my mom is one of those insanely crafty people who seems to be able to make just about anything she sets her mind to, so I'd been prodding at her for over a year to try something in the goth or steampunk style.

I think she's done pretty well. You can find the stuff we have for sale, here:
http://www.etsy.com/shop/houseofdecay

And pics of the rest of the things she's made, here;

Currently we just got ahold of a watch repair kit and were able to dissect several old pocket watches, so we should have more with watch movements and various parts featured, shortly.

Since I'm not the only one who likes pixel-hording and dressing little things up... www.gaiaonline.com is another website that has Steampunk items for you customizable character! You can change gender, skin, eyes, mouth, and hair at first.  Then you do things around the site or play flash games to get gold.  Gold gets items that dress your avatar, or home, or car, or aquarium xD A few more examples under the cut )

I have no idea, I just know they were fun to build. I was lucky enough to come across a handful of projector lens at an antique market recently, and knew I could do something with them... with some wet-molded leather and some polished brass bits, I was off and running.

Oh yeah, there's more... )

During this holiday season, I noticed more than a few comments from customers shopping for gifts a Sock Dreams that stated they could not find sock garters at any brick-and-mortar department/clothing stores, and they had done an online search and were happy to have found us. A couple of them even said the salespeople looked at them as if they were crazy! I don't know if it's entirely true, but thought it worth bringing up here, because we do sell a variety of sock garters, some of which are custom made for Sock Dreams. You can see them all here: www.sockdreams.com/_shop/pages/accessories_cat_CategoryID_74.php But of possible particular interest to this community are the ones at the top, the Geared Up Garters. They are a bit on the pricey side because they are handmade for us and in limited supply. The lovely lady who makes these and other garters on our site made a custom one for my derby! , I'd like to thank everyone in this community who has ordered from Sock Dreams over this past year, getting us through a bit of a slow spell due to the recession and making this holiday season a record year! I'm certain there will be another discount code given exclusively to Steampunk Fashion members in the new year... Happy Holidays to Everyone!

what are your favorite shades of blue? what are your least favorites?
my favorites are cerulean and dark teal [if that counts].

least favorite, and it almost counts, and it is the only color i loathe, and so what if its more purple i'm making it count because i hate it, and its not even a color its an abomination, is periwinkle.

KILL ME i cannot draw anything.
